A friend of mine is in the military and is serving in Iraq. He will be there for over a year. We have been communicating via e mail, so I have been able to follow his deployment and get a tiny glimpse into what it must be like for him. When he left, I pictured him living in a tent in the wind and sand. To my surprise, they are living in these prefab steel buildings.

The Government Services Administration has approved a lot of steel buildings for government use, including use by all branches of the military. Commercial boat yards, farmers and auto mechanics use steel buildings for storage, service areas and retail. A structure can be chosen, shipped and erected within a very short time frame. There is little unused space in steel buildings. With no gutters to clean or siding to maintain, the steel buildings require almost no upkeep.

The solution was simple, and the Navy used the lightweight structures which could not only be effortlessly transported but also needed no skilled labor to set up the Quonset huts. In fact the building itself could be assembled just about anywhere, on concrete, iron pilings or even directly on the ground. The interiors could be used as needed and the open area could be concerted into residential units, military offices, storage structures or even be used as barracks. These buildings provided the US military with enhanced facilities and were a far cry from the inconvenient tenting on wooden bases that were usually used at that time.

From its application as military shelters, many other contractors began developing their own versions of the Quonset hut for other uses.

The availability of pre manufactured units for metal buildings save manual labor and the sundry costs associated with manufacturing concrete blocks and structures on site as well.

Among other benefits are lower maintenance and safeguarding costs which also translates into much lower insurance premiums when compared to building made primarily out of wood for example. Pests and fire are more likely to spread in a building made primarily out of wooden planks than one made out of metal. Metal buildings also fare better during an earthquake or hurricane as the resistance is much higher due to the compressive strength. Metal building are also more durable and capable of supporting the immense weight of skyscrapers compared to buildings made of wood which can only support a couple of floors.

A metal garage can also be put together quite easily. Virtually every commercially available metal garage can be user assembled, and do not require a lot of tools and building equipment. Even first time builders won’t encounter too much difficulty when building a metal garage.

When you choose wood as the material of choice in the construction of your buildings, you will be enduring frustration and heartache when it comes to the durability of your new structure. Over time, the components of your building made from wood will inevitably rot. When you choose metal buildings, you will have a structure that will be impervious to rotting. Since metal is such a durable material, metal buildings will also have solid protection against weather. With metal buildings, you will not have to worry about your building burning down in a fire, the products inside your building will stay dry in a rainstorm, and your building will not become infested by termites.
