From its original usage as military structures, Quonset huts have seen many enhancements and other companies began to make variations to the model for other uses. The basic structure has undergone several redesigns and the major one occurred in 1943 when the manufacturing unit at Quonset Point was reestablished as part of the Stran Steel Division of the Great Lakes Steel Corporation. This modified Quonset hut was more stretched out and had a structure that used the original full arch rib. Versions of the Quonset hut model were manufactured to meet specific requirements, a prime example being the Pacific huts, which helped even conserve metal reserves. Some had heavy steel piping and these were specifically built to serve as air raid shelters.
The metallic structures of Quonset huts are now a day being made to allow plantation of windows and partitions but not fully. However, this is not the case for all times to come for options are on a continuous rise. Manufacturers are genuinely trying to honor the needs of the clients who approach them with very specific problems, requiring equally specific solutions and thereby needing manufacturers to provide with varying design on a base framework of the Quonset huts.
People in the slowing down economies are looking for business ideas that have not been exploited by many. Quonset huts are one such area where there is a lot of scope of growth and development.
It started off from the idea of airplane hangars built by the Military and Air force. These could be easily assembled by hand just like a freighter and in case it had to be moved, it was as easy as taking the structure apart and rebuilding it on a different location just as it was in the previous one. Only a handful of soldiers were required to 6 meter wide and 15 meter long Quonset huts. Quonset huts were used by allies to protect their assets and soldiers from sunlight, rain and snow.
These initial Quonset huts were neither good to look at nor very strong, therefore construction companies in the early sixties decided to change that by making stronger and better looking Quonset huts.
